Tizen Association Celebrates Progress and Discusses Future

More than 250 Tizen Association members and ecosystem participants gathered in Barcelona, Spain, on February 26, 2013, to discuss the commercialization of Tizen devices by NTT DOCOMO and Orange, demonstrate recent progress and discuss what the future holds for Tizen.

Samsung announced its intention to add to the Tizen ecosystem by launching Tizen devices in 2013. Samsung has been working with operators and content partners in launch markets and will offer a combination of global and local content in each market

Orange and NTT DOCOMO confirmed plans to commercialize Tizen devices in the second half of 2013.

Executives from Huawei, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Samsung and Intel underscored the value of an open ecosystem, highlighting customer choice and delivering valuable services to consumers. Executives from these companies view openness as a key to raising the bar for user experience. Tizen has fully embraced the shift toward more openness, leveraging industry standards from the ground up. This commitment across industry leaders distinguishes Tizen from other new mobile OS’s and is contributing to the development of a robust ecosystem.

Tizen 2.0

Earlier in February, the Tizen 2.0 Magnolia SDK and source code were released to developers, operators and OEMs. Tizen 2.0 represents a major milestone and includes many new features and improvements over previous versions.

Tizen Store

As part of the Tizen Association’s focus on ecosystem development, the Tizen Store will launch later this year with thousands of apps, allowing developers to monetize their work and creating a robust ecosystem. The outreach to app developers to build HTML5 apps has begun and more details will be available in May at the Tizen Developer conference in San Francisco.

A number of developers were on hand during the Barcelona event to showcase their applications for Tizen and illustrate specific aspect of the Tizen platform, including:

  • App Store: App discovery through Home page, Tizen Picks, Categories
  • Cut the Rope: Ease of porting existing HTML5 app to Tizen
  • Asphalt 7: Support for high-performance graphics via Tizen APIs and future hardware
  • Vimeo: Smooth video playback and content sharing
  • Mr. Radio: Listen to radio from around the world, match music to weather
  • Appbackr: Algorithm driven app discovery and recruitment for platforms, carriers and OEMs
